New Poem: My Eyes Rumbled and Swelled

Welcome.

I have been making the habit of keeping a pen and some paper at my bedside. This poem was drafted by this new exercise in writing and recording my thoughts. I wrote My Eyes Rumbled and Swelled a few evenings ago and edited and tweaked it just yesterday during the overcast of the morning. I hope you will give a listen and that you enjoy this, one of my most intense poems to date.

My Eyes Rumbled and Swelled

The back of my eyes rumbled and swelled,
and she danced up-side-down

saying that she is coming home with me-
I tripped down damp pavements,
we survived

we lay-
and I watched the blurry shadows on the ceiling,
as we shared our trapped bodies-
in perfect penmanship

when things dried up-
and the clouds cleared,
I poured dirt upon my bed,
to bury the memory

well, it sprouted again this Spring,
my eyes rumbled and swelled.

Same as it ever was.

There is nothing like making sense to yourself.

....at least that is how I feel at times.

If find myself in that state of mind as of late. While painting this year, I have noticed echoes from my work from previous years. Specific works are etched in my brain and I had no idea they were still there, meandering and fermenting even still.
I decided to dig up some pics, I apologize for the poor quality in the images as some of the paintings are no longer available to re-shoot, and set them here together with each other. This post places the paintings in pairs as I saw fit.

This part of my current painting process has been validating and inspiring. I hope you can recognize and experience a similar interesting tour through these works that represent some of my efforts in recent years. Thank you.

The mixed media tapes podcast

I want to introduce my latest podcast effort: The mixed-media tapes. The series is now complete for listening. More on the project:

The mixed-media tapes is a short artist talk series based on word and phrase prompts. I have invited visual artists from around the world to share their thoughts and stories based on their selected prompt(s) from a list I have given them. Two of the prompts are: 'metaphysics,' and another is 'the finished painting.' Plenty more at the blog. I hope you enjoy this as much as I have.

Your host, Phillip J. Mellen. Cheers!

For a snippet, please listen to the short 3 minute teaser below. If you like what you hear, I invite you to check out the blog and give a listen to the full features: the mixed-media tapes podcast
