Interview on the Beard's Framing blog

I was recently interviewed for the Beard's Framing blog. I share a lot about my podcast and my own paintings. I thought a lot about ahtcast for this and I express in more clarity about what it means to me as the host. I haven't really spoke about ahtcast in this way before because I couldn't really find the words, but here I did. I hope you enjoy it, thanks! (at the blog you may have to refresh the page if you don't see the entire interview, there is some kind of glitch)

Interview can be found here: Beard's Framing interviews Phillip J. Mellen.

Thank you for your support.

Ninth Terrace Annual Open 2014

London based painter and musician, Karl Bielik, has organized a group show now in it's 9th year. This show is known as the Terrace Annual Open: Off The Wall. This grand show represents work by over 80 artists from around the globe. This year, as with every year, has the works on view in an outdoor space, exposed to the elements and chance, for a one night viewing and casual yet up-beat reception.

I have one piece in the show and am honored to be showing with so many great artists.

More on the show via this Abstract Critical pre-installation interview with Karl Bielik from a few years back:

More on the show's concept is detailed in the interview with Karl Bielik conducted by Brian Edmonds: Interview

Many thanks to Karl Bielik and the artists in the show.

This is not a poetry slam

This is not a poetry slam.

Poems read in this video:

She ceased to sing
a pause
and I wade
in the dark

what should I do now
what happened
what have I done?

it was only a breath long
though it felt like days

she never looked away

if only I knew
if only I had
I would have noticed-

that I didn't look away either
we, as silent language

for a breath
until death.

.............................

we share in horses
birds sing in yellow
as the sun
the sun

the wind and the weekend
shook our cameras
to bits
to pieces

our heads
are so tired with each other
what a curse...

we too, sing for more

from the day
through the night
our eyes
they held tight

as our ears made out...

with each other
we grew tired
so we gave back
we gave in.

Here is part of my statement for this trio of work. It's a poem of sorts:

Like dye in the water,
and I don't know what to call her,
I wade in the white and in the blue,
from a seed, this imagery grew
Flowers
Water
Maps
I need these things too-
this was an experiment,
and the jury is still out
I forgot the message sent,
and what the paintings are about.

.......................................................

I hope to see you at the opening reception for one or both of these sure to be fine showings of art. Make sure you say hello if you make it!

(this is what I look like)

Podcasting Painters: David A. Linneweh and Phillip J. Mellen in conversation

As many may know, I host an artist interview podcast. My experiences as a host of such a show has been tremendously rewarding and inspiring. Here, I figured I would share a recent conversation with another artist interview podcast host. None other than David A. Linneweh of Studio Break. A little tech talk, a little insight, and a whole lot of gratitude. Please listen in and hear why we do what we do, and just a bunch on how it influences us. Influences us as painters, hosts, and as people. Check it out below:
